Confusion about Work at Home Fees

I recently read a comment by someone who said:

“I have a home “business”. These are the ones that make you pay a fee. It’s worth it if you really want to make money though.”

The word “fee” tends to put people immediately on the defense since we’ve always been told to never, ever pay a fee to join a business. And this is true…kind of…

There are multiple different kinds of fees when it comes to a work at home business - it’s a matter of deciphering what the fee is used for and why.

It’s not unusual for a home based business or network marketing company to charge a fee to get you started in the business. Typically this fee is for some initial products and advertising pieces to help get you started. This kind of fee is completely acceptable provided that you aren’t being overcharged for the products and you aren’t “required” to pay a fee each and every month to the company to remain in business.

Let’s address each one of those:

A) Being overcharged for the products. If you have decided to sign up with a Network Marketing company, you already know about their products (or at least you should - if you don’t I don’t suggest you sign with the company). When you sign up with a legitimate network marketing company, generally you have to pay a start-up fee that gets you some products you can begin to show your customers. These products are usually priced at a wholesale cost - not retail. This way, when you sell a product at the retail price, you make a profit.

B) A monthly fee. Some companies have what they call an “auto-ship” program. What this means is that for a set price each month, the company will send you a set amount of products related to the fee you pay each month. For the most part, auto-ship programs are great if you sell a lot of products. For example, one company I know of will auto-ship you the newest fragranced candle each month along with votives and a few extras for a set price. This way you receive a product well below retail that you can turn around and sell for a profit.

If however you are just beginning your business, it might be rather difficult to turn these items around into profit. I personally don’t suggest an auto-ship program until you’ve built up a steady clientele…many network marketing leaders may tell you different but also keep in mind their intentions.

If you sign up for an auto-ship program, not only are you paying a fee each month but your upline or leader also gets a portion of that fee. So before you sign up, be sure it’s in YOUR best interest to do so and not someone else’s.

6 Tips for MLM Best Practices

In network marketing or MLM, it’s important to keep on top of the current best practices to be sure your business continues to grow. Here are 6 best practices tips that many top MLM leaders use successfully to build their businesses.

  • Always have an advertising budget regardless of where you market. Advertising is absolutely essential to any business but especially network marketing businesses. Stick to your budget for at least a year so that you have on-going momentum. At the end of the year, see how well that advertising panned out for you and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Keepin constant contact with your team. Touch base with them on a regular basis either by telephone or by email. This is extremely important for you to implement; especially for those of you who are serious team builders. Your team members came on board with you because they know, like and trust you. Just because they join you in business doesn’t mean that you stop working with those relationships. Work with your leader in developing a strategy of keeping in touch and motivating your team.
  • Be consistent in your lead generation. As a distributor, having a constant influx of interested prospects in your pipeline is necessary. It’s also important to make sure that the system you use to attract those potential prospects is a method that your team can duplicate. In other words, someone brand-spanking new in the business or even a veteran should be able to use the system without fail.
  • Build leaders and make them successful. You want people on your team to be motivated and to want to do whatever it takes to build their business. Not people who just want to “try it out and see if it fits”. Usually if someone just wants to “try it out” and there’s a minor glitch for one reason or another, they very well may quit. Leaders also make sure that they’re distributors are ordering products. Leaders rarely complain and have their own goals, aspirations and dreams. True leaders will also be able to take over for you in a meeting if you happen to be away. You want to build leaders with these strengths.
  • Have a written plan. As a professional network marketer, you’ll need to write out your plan and make note of how you want to achieve your goals. Do this on a weekly basis. Review it at the end of the week and if you aren’t satisfied with how things turned out, make adjustments, fix up your plan and then work it the following week.
  • Find out what kinds of marketing works for you and then focus on making that marketing the best it can be. This could be a variety of things such as writing articles, blogging, creating on-line videos, advertising in e-zines or even advertising with Google’s AdWords. If you’re unsure what to do, implement what is currently working for others until you find what works best for you.
  • Becoming a successful network marketing distributor and leader does involve following the best practices others are using with great success. Study them, implement them consistently, and watch your business experience on-going growth.
